Call to Worship
Our call to worship comes from 2 Corinthians 1:20. Hear the word of the Lord: For every one of God’s promises is “Yes” in Jesus. Therefore, through him we also say “Amen” to the glory of God. If you’re able, please rise and sing 257 – Tis So Sweet To Trust in Jesus Prayer Holy God of light and glory: You alone are good. You alone are pure and righteous. And, therefore, You alone are worthy of our praise, our devotion and honor. In the brilliance of Your light, we are revealed as we are and left speechless … without excuse; were it not for Your grace and mercy we are hopeless as well. So we come to this morning, not as righteous and proud people, but as desperate sinners and forgiven saints. Help us this morning, either to find grace and salvation in Jesus Christ, or to be reminded of that grace. Lord, we thank you that we were able to come to worship you today. We thank you for waking us up, and allowing us to safely travel here, so that we could gather with Your holy church. But Lord we pray for those who weren’t able to be here today. We lift up our brothers and sisters who have been afflicted by sickness or circumstance. We ask that you be with them this morning and comfort their spirits. Lord, as we gather this morning, remind us of our mission as a church. May we be the hands and feet of Jesus as we seek to serve our neighbours. May we speak the words of Jesus, as we seek to tell others of His saving grace. May our worship this morning, renew our strength and encourage our souls, so that you would be glorified, and disciples multiplied, through the power of the Gospel. In Jesus’s name, Amen. Worship Through Giving Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts. Worship the LORD in holy splendor; tremble before him, all the earth. —Psalm 96: 8-9, Front Cover – The Doxology OT Reading – Genesis 22:1-14 1 After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2 He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. 5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.” 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. 7 And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” 8 Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together. 9 When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 12 He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.” 212 – Nothing But the Blood Call to Confession 9 All, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, 10 as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” – Romans 3:9-12 Prayer of Confession Private Confession Assurance of Pardon 3 For the Scriptures tell us, “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” 4 When people work, their wages are not a gift, but something they have earned. 5 But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in the God who forgives the ungodly. – Romans 4:3-5 257 – The Solid Rock Sermon: John 8:48-59 Did Jesus Really Believe He Was God?– Taylor Callen
