Call to Worship:
I will praise God’s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving. This will please the Lord more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hooves. Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and all that move in them, for God will save his people —Psalm 69:30-31, 34-35 Offering: Let us give thanks to the Lord with all our being. In the company of the upright, let us honor God for the blessings and goodness we have received. —based on Psalm 111: 1 OT Reading- Ezekiel 37:21-28 21 then say to them, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will take the people of Israel from the nations among which they have gone, and will gather them from all around, and bring them to their own land. 22 And I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel. And one king shall be king over them all, and they shall be no longer two nations, and no longer divided into two kingdoms. 23 They shall not defile themselves anymore with their idols and their detestable things, or with any of their transgressions. But I will save them from all the backslidings in which they have sinned, and will cleanse them; and they shall be my people, and I will be their God. 24 “My servant David shall be king over them, and they shall all have one shepherd. They shall walk in my rules and be careful to obey my statutes. 25 They shall dwell in the land that I gave to my servant Jacob, where your fathers lived. They and their children and their children's children shall dwell there forever, and David my servant shall be their prince forever. 26 I will make a covenant of peace with them. It shall be an everlasting covenant with them. And I will set them in their land and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in their midst forevermore. 27 My dwelling place shall be with them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 28 Then the nations will know that I am the Lord who sanctifies Israel, when my sanctuary is in their midst forevermore.” Prayer of Confession: “13 But I pray to you, Lord, in the time of your favor; in your great love, O God, answer me with your sure salvation. 14 Rescue me from the mire, do not let me sink; deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep waters. 15 Do not let the floodwaters engulf me or the depths swallow me up or the pit close its mouth over me. 16 Answer me, Lord, out of the goodness of your love; in your great mercy turn to me. 17 Do not hide your face from your servant; answer me quickly, for I am in trouble. 18 Come near and rescue me; deliver me because of my foes.” —Psalm 69:13-18 Assurance of Pardon Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: “The LORD is our righteousness.” —Jeremiah 23:5-6 I wrote this prayer for this coming Sunday service and thought I'd share to help others pray for what's going on in Afghanistan. Dear Lord,
We praise you on this Sabbath day. We thank you that we can come to this house to hear your word opened and preached in our lives, to hear the voices of the saints and to sing with them, and to be present with the members of your holy church. We enjoy these blessings in peace, but this week our hearts break for our brothers and sisters in Afghanistan. Lord, we pray for their physical protection. We ask that you allow as many as possible to safely flee. We lift up the church and its leaders that they can stand firm in the faith. We even pray for the Taliban, Lord, for we know that if you could convert Saul of Tarsus (who persecuted you and your church), You can save and redeem even these evil men today. Humble them, and may they find forgiveness for their wicked deeds in the blood of Christ, not merely as a prophet, but as the Son of God. Beyond the church, we lift up the refugees fleeing their homes, as well as those stuck in the country under this oppressive rule. Lord, come quickly. Our hearts long for your return when you will right all wrongs. You are the sovereign King of the universe, Nothing is too difficult for you. We ask these things in Your Son’s powerful name, Amen. I have been thinking about this statistic a lot since becoming the pastor of HBC. I read this story in Spurgeon's book "Feathers for Arrows" and it thought it was encouraging. IN Edinburgh a Sabbath-school teacher was once visiting close by, and in one of the top flats of a stair, found a poor family living in a small but clean room. From conversation with the father and mother, she soon discovered that it was one of those cases where, from the long illness of the father, the family had fallen from comparative comfort to poverty. He was now, however, better, and had been able for some time to work a little, so as to keep his family from destitution, but by no means to enable them to live in comfort. Having learned so much of their worldly concerns, their visitor next began to speak of their souls' interests. She asked them if they went to any church.
Next Sabbath several of the children were at her Sabbath-school, and told her that that day their family had been at church. Since that day they have been hearers of the Word. How many souls are perishing in Edinburgh and other towns, "because, though all things are now ready, NOBODY EVER ASKED THEM TO COME!" Will not the blood of their souls be required at the hand of those who profess to have tasted a Saviour's love, and yet make not one effort to pluck brands out of the fire? -Scottish Sunday School Teacher's Magazine. We are living in a strange time where there are mulititudes who have been neglecting Sunday worship (either by sin or by legitimate concerns from Covid). Will you be one to "Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled." (Luke 14:23)
